American Chop Suey Recipe | Veg Chopsuey

American Chop Suey is a tasty and comforting meal that is popular all across the world. There are many variants of this recipe available in different regions like beef chopsuey or veg chopsuey.

The original American Chop Suey recipe was invented by American Chinese community settled in America and it is made with ground beef and omelet. Today, we are making the vegetables version of American chopsuey.

The deep fried noodles are served with stir-fried vegetable gravy, which is also known as chopsuey sauce. It has a sweet and sour taste very similar to Chinese dishes. Adjust the consistency of sauce according to your preferences.

You can add or replace vegetables in this recipe according to your choice and make this dish more nutritious. Make sure to serve immediately when the sauce is hot and noodles are crispy.

Ingredients

  • 2 pack noodles
  • 5 cup water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 2 tbsp corn flour
  • Oil for frying

For chopsuey sauce:

  • 1 carrot (sliced)
  • 4 tbsp cabbage (shredded)
  • ½ onion (petals)
  • ½ capsicum (chopped)
  • ¼ cup tomato sauce
  • 4 tsp oil
  • 3 clove garlic (finely chopped)
  • 4 tbsp spring onion (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • ½ tsp schezwan sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp pepper (crushed)
  • 2 cup water

For corn flour slurry:

  • 2 tsp corn flour
  • ¼ cup water

How to make American Chop Suey

In a large pot, add 5 cups of water, 1 tsp salt, and 1 tsp oil. When water starts boiling, add noodles and boil for 2 minutes until al dente. Drain the noodles, rinse with cold water and transfer to a bowl.

Add 2 tbsp of corn flour and mix to coat noodles thoroughly. Fry noodles in hot oil until golden and crisp. Remove the fried noodles from oil and set aside.

For chopsuey sauce

In a large kadai, heat oil and sauté garlic and 2 tbsp spring onion. Add carrot, capsicum, cabbage, and onion and stir-fry until vegetables are cooked. The crunchiness of vegetables should remain there, so don’t overcook.

Add tomato sauce, vinegar, soy sauce, schezwan sauce, tsp pepper, salt and sugar. Stir-fry until the sauce turns thick and then add 2 cups of water.

For corn flour slurry, mix corn flour and water very well and pour into the sauce. Stir the sauce continuously until thickens. Lastly, add 2 tbsp spring onion and mix well. The delicious chopsuey sauce is ready.

Pour the sauce over noodles and serve. Enjoy!
