Paula Deen Chocolate Cream Pie

Ingredients

Filling

1 (9-inch) pre-baked pie crust

3 egg yolks, beaten

1 cup sugar

3 tablespoons cocoa powder

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Pinch of salt

2 cups milk

1 tablespoon butter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Meringue

3 egg whites

¼ teaspoon cream of tartar

4 tablespoons sugar

Instructions

For Filling:

In a bowl, beat yolks and milk together.

In a saucepan, mix together the sugar, cocoa, flour and salt. Slowly add in the yolks and milk mixture and stir well. Start cooking over low heat and add in butter and vanilla.

Transfer this mixture to a bowl and let it cool. Prepare the pie crust in a baking dish. When mixture is cooled down then pour it into the pie crust.

For Meringue:

Preheat the oven to 350 F.

Now beat the egg whites with cream of tartar until they start making soft peaks. Then add 1 tablespoon of sugar at a time and continue beating until the whites form stiff peaks.

Spread the meringue all over the pie filling so that it touches the crust all around.

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until brown.

Garnish with your favorite toppings like strawberries and serve.
